Evidence-informed health policy is an approach that seeks to systematically obtain, assess and incorporate credible scientific evidence into the health policy development process. The Caribbean Public Health Agency is committed to promoting better use of evidence for policy, and assisting our Member States to narrow their research-policy gaps through synthesis, dissemination, exchange and application of knowledge to address the public health priorities of the Caribbean. We do this through the Evidence Informed Decision Making Network of the Caribbean.

EvIDeNCe provides services in three critical areas:

  • Knowledge availability (providing access to robust and locally applicable knowledge
  • Knowledge exchange (supporting regular and deliberate dialogue between policy-makers, researchers, stakeholders and policy constituents
  • Capacity building (strengthening the skills of policy-makers, researchers and other research users and providing them with tools and resources for good policy making)

Business Area 1: Providing the Knowledge Base to Support Caribbean Health Policymaking

Our goal is to provide easy access to locally applicable knowledge to support Caribbean decision-making needs:
    1. We produce evidence briefs for policy, stakeholder dialogue summaries and rapid syntheses
    2. We maintain a database of research and other policy relevant documents on the EvIDeNCe portal .

Business Area 2: Facilitating Dialogue and Knowledge Exchange

    1. We bring together the key stakeholders who are involved in or affected by a priority health policy issue and facilitate deliberation around a pre-circulated evidence brief, so that the views and experiences of these stakeholders can be shared and the critical next steps to address the policy issue identified

    2. To promote knowledge sharing among policymakers across the Caribbean, we sponsor a network of regional health policymakers. Their activities are also aimed at encouraging co-production of policies, thus increasing the likelihood of evidence-based policy recommendations being implemented.

    Business Area 3: Building Capacity

CARPHA provides training for policymakers in the essentials of evidence-informed health policy. These areas include: how to find and use research evidence for decision making; setting agendas and developing policies; communicating research findings for decision-making..Contact us to discuss a customized training approach for you and your team.
